Standardising search terms

Standardising search terms

I'm looking at making some changes to improve searches.

For example, some issues might include contents using the term "Volkswagen" and some might use "VW", but if you search for one, you don't get results for the other.

So, I am putting together a list of these types of terms which I will standardise, so that a search for one will bring up the results for both.

So far I have the following terms:

* Volkswagen and VW
* Formula 1, Formula One and F1
* Grand Prix and GP
* General Motors and GM
* GMH and Holden
* Holden Special Vehicles and HSV
* America and USA
* Chev, Chevy and Chevrolet

I also have the option to standardise makes and models that have different names in some markets, for example:

* Miata and MX5
* Acura and Honda

If you can think of any other terms that should be standardised, please reply here.

Thanks for reminding me about this, James.

I had stopped work on it because it became a bit difficult due to the way I store magazine contents, but I'm back looking at it again.

Ideally I want AMG models to show up when you search for "mercedes", but if you search for "amg" I only want AMG models to show up.

I want all Chevrolets to show up regardless of whether the search is for "chev", "chevy" or "chevrolet".

I want MX5 and Miatas to show up no matter which term is searched for.

Mitsubishi/Colt is a bit unfortunate because here in Australia (and maybe NZ?) we have the Mitsubishi Colt, so if I combine these search terms then it will no longer be possible to search specifically for the Colt model as it will bring up all Mitsubishi's... Unless I somehow work out a way to make that possible.

Anyway, I will keep working on this change to search.
