"The Autocar" was founded in 1895 and has been through four distinct phases in its long life.
From 1895 until issue #3437 dated 29 December 1961 it was titled as "The Autocar".
It had a makeover from issue #3438 dated 05 January 1962 until issue #4775 dated 31 August 1988 as was titled as "Autocar".
It merged with " Motor" to form "Autocar & Motor" as from issue #4776 dated 07 September 1988.
With issue # 5094 dated 21 September 1994 the title reverted to "Autocar" and continues today under this title.
There has been three documented interruptions to the publication of this magazine.
In 1926 due to the General Strike.
In 1973/1974 due to a fuel crisis, there were no issues published between 08 November 1973 issue #4040 and 30 March 1974 issue #4041, about 19 expected issues.
In 1975 due to a printers' industrial action, there no issues published between 17 May 1975 issue #4099 and 07 June 1975 issue #4100, two expected issues.
In 1974, issue #4053 was a combined issue for 22 and 29 June 1974.
